A New Start

I have decided, now is the time to take myself seriously. I have dreams and wishes, yet, they all seem to be put on the back burner. No one and no thing puts them there, aside from myself. I don't give myself the confidence or support I need to do what I want; to be a person my family and I can be proud of; to stand out instead of blend in or fade away.

I am a wife and a mother, that is only one part of me, the only part that stays on the frontline in my life. I love to tell stories, through writing and photography. Starting now, I will be re-defining who I am, because where I take my life is up to me.

It's Tuesday... Where's the Teaser?

I have been hard at work trying to finish my first draft so that I am able to completely focus all my energy on finishing NaNoWriMo this November. I am very close to making my goal. Unfortunately, I will not have any teasers that are from the new writing as it may give too much away and it is all hand written in a notebook rather than on my computer.

Today's teaser comes from Chapter 10:

Seryn slumped against the trunk of the willow tree, exhausted and out of breath. Pulling her knees up to her chest, she watched as the carefree sprites danced and darted across the water, longing to be able to forget the last few days and be able to find comfort in their jovial play. A chill rushed through her bones. Something was not right here. She wondered what was off, something in the garden or within her. Without warning all the sprites froze before darting away into holes in the trees and the ground. Seryn darted from beneath the willow tree, scanning the lifeless garden around her. The silence and stillness shook her nerves.

Shivering, she noticed dusk fast approaching. The garden was bathed in a soft, golden glow. While the garden looked warm and inviting, Seryn couldn’t shake the tremors slowly overtaking her body. She tensed as the sunset shadows began to creep around the flowers. A soft blue glow shimmered from within the bud of a tulip at Seryn’s feet. She knelt closer to the glowing flower. A sprite shot up from the bloom, leveling his eyes with Seryn’s. His coal black eyes bored into hers; Seryn jerked back in surprise, spite’s eyes were normally bright and translucent. The grin forming across his lips was wicked. The tremors spread throughout her body as the sprite opened his mouth, an evil hiss filling the air around her. Seryn threw her hands over her ears.

The hissing faded into a cackle. Seryn lowered her hands as the sprite began to speak.

“Foolish girl,” his voice crackled as if broken into a million pieces. “You sit here and sulk while your father is locked up, fading away. You selfish child.”

Teaser Tuesday

I have not done a Teaser in such a long time. I hadn't written anything new in such a long time, but now that I have some progress in my WIP, I decided to share some of my new writing. This is an unedited first draft piece from Chapter 11.

“He’s weak, but somehow, he is able to combat the effects of my Serum. Your blood has to be the missing piece.”

Seryn shook her head as she glared, “Weak? Look at him, really look at him. Do you see what weighs on his face?”

Sebias watched the broken man behind the faded glass. “He is weak. Always has been.”

Seryn scoffed, “He is not weak. His face shows his grief and guilt. No matter how much of that junk you pump into him, he will not change into one of your minions. His humanity is too strong; it will keep fighting your drug.” Seryn smiled as she watched realization slide across Sebias’s face.

Sebias stood in a daze, his evil smirk cracking through his bewilderment. “You are so good, but when it is your turn, will you be able to fight the drug?”

Seryn saw Sebias raise a syringe filled with the Serum over his head; malevolence shining in his dark eyes. She raised her arms over her head, shrinking down to the floor in horror.

Sebias brought the needle down to her thigh. The needle pierced through her jeans and snapped. Confusion swept over Sebias’ features as he tried to shove another needle into Seryn’s exposed arm and watched the needle snap as it hit her skin. Her skin shimmered each place the needle had touched it.

Seryn watched in confusion.

Sebias was flooded with rage. He yanked Seryn roughly by her wrists and dragged her out of the observation room. The rage boiled in his eyes as he stalked down the darkened corridor and briskly turned a sharp corner. He stopped in front of a large metal door, and opened it forcefully. The evil smirk crept across his face as he forcibly pushed Seryn inside, and then slammed the door.

A Little Progress

I have finished two more chapters of my current work in progress, Serenity. I have an ultimate goal now set for this novel. I am aiming to finish the first draft by October 1. I want to participate in NaNoWriMo and actually stand some kind of a chance. Writing this story and attempting to write another story simultaniously did not work out too well for me at all. My head was too wrapped up in my first story. This year, my first story will be complete. Come October, I will begin looking at the fifty other ideas I have floating around, do some character profiles, some plotting, some outlining, and I should be able to choose one of my new ideas for November.

Cross your fingers for me that I may be able to accomplish this goal. Hopefully, the writing spike will equal a blog post spike.

Let me know what you think of my new blog look. I fought with Blogger for 2 hours last night trying to get it just right. Still not perfect for my tastes, but close enough.

Out of my funk?

I believe I may finally be out of my funk. I hope I can start getting a better writing time, but the last couple of months found me feeling a bit... ill. We will be welcoming a new addition to our family. That's right, I was not 100% because we have a beautiful surprise coming to us, due January 1, 2011.

That is all I have to write right now as we have cleaning to do.

Only in This House...

I have decided, what better way to write than to write randoms in my blog; thus incorporating my life and writing into one tidy little box. Although, my life is far from tidy, what with four kids (only two are my own) running around all day. We enjoy ourselves and that is what makes this chaotic life, absolutely beautiful. There are times that it is complete insanity and all the kids are fighting and yelling. Then there are times when everyone is getting along and all that can be seen are smiles and all that can be heard is the sweet sound of giggles and gut-busting laughter. We play our music too loud and dance around with the shades drawn up, not caring if a passerby stops to watch -- or laugh. The TV may be turned on with cartoons showing constantly, but the kids seldom watch for more than a few minutes at a time before imaginations are in full swing. Not one child notices when I switch off the TV, and if one does notice, there is rarely a tantrum and play is continued.

Only in this house, could window washing consist of princess dresses, baby wipes and giggles. Only in this house, could four children have so much fun wiping down windows and woodwork for twenty minutes without so much as a frusterated yelp. Only in this house...

No Postings

Well, my apparant lack of writing in Serenity has filtered into my poor blog. I am so sorry to all of you who check my blog and have found nothing new. I am horrible, but life has gotten away with me. Apparently, the days are getting shorter because I seem to be running out of hours in my day.

An update on my progress in Serenity, or lack of progress... I am still stuck, but I am working at getting unstuck. I have printed all of my current progress and I am reading through, hoping to get a feel for where I want the story to go. I do have a basic outline, but the next two chapters are a little difficult to shape into what I need them to be.

I will be updating the blog a little more frequently than once a month, but for today, I need to get back to my sick little boy.

Insanity Bug

Today, I post not as a writer, but as a woman sitting in the midst of crazy children, too many toys, about 5 loads of laundry that needto be sorted and put away, three loads that need to be washed, and a less than perfectly clean house. My carpets need vacuuming, but that has to wait as our vacuum broke last week and we cannot afford a new one until our taxes hit our bank account.

Speaking of taxes, everything just happened to occur at the perfect time this year. We have tabs due on both vehicles, though that happens this time every year. We need new tires on one of our vehicles. The batteries in all three of our telephone handsets decided to quite functioning properly last week and now we are lucky to make it through the entire day with a charged phone. I am so grateful that we will have the funds to fix all of these things right away.

Life is chaotic, unorganized, and fun... and oh, how I love it!

Thoughtful Thursday

I have decided that I will not set any writing goals for myself. Yeah, do want to write at least 30 minutes everyday, but Serenity comes out better when I'm not setting a time to finish a certain part. Plus, with kids, I prefer to delegate my time for them and when I have something I need to write, I will. Yeah, a story won't write itself, but it won't come out very well if I try to rush it along. So, I will now set my new goal for Serenity. I will write the story when it needs to be written, not when I need it written.

There you have it, my reasonable goal. :D

Let Me Grow Up

Looking through my binder of poetry is a little depressing. Some of the stuff I had written is not pleasant. It is not all dark and dreadful, just sad. Also, I varied between being afraid of any type of punctuation, where there is not much at all, to being in love with punctuation and seeing it splattered all over the piece. I will type all of my flashback work exactly as it is in the binder. Most of what is written is the first draft. I felt that if a piece of my poetry was edited, it would loose something in the process.

Let Me Grow Up

I am eighteen years old
The decisions I make are my own
The life I am living is mine
I am legally able to be an adult
So why do you still act as if I were a child

Wordle Word Cloud

So, out of boredom, I decided to place what I have completed of my first draft into http://www.wordle.net/ and it generated a word cloud. I most definitely had an issue in the first few chapters with over describing eye movement... a lot of that junk will be cut out in my first full edit sweep. My character names are HUGE, meaning I've used them the most in my manuscript. I will be looking into ways to cut down the name usage. Besides the overdescription of eye/ head movement, and overusing names, I think the word usage is pretty balanced thus far.

I'm Writing a Novel... RT Wednesday

So, I'm jumping in a little late, but I am posting.

Question of the day is: What's everyone's reaction when they find out you're writing a book?

I haven't told many people that I'm not actually close to. I post status updates on Facebook that are writing related and people who are interested are the people who respond. I've gotten generally good responses from people. Usually it is the actually genuine "Good for you." I also have people opening up conversations for me with the excited, "She's a writer." I usually blush and smile. I love having a base of people who are supportive of my choice to write.

The only thing I get from people that seems difficult to answer is the, "What's it about?" I wish I could answer that at this time, but I really can't just yet. I have the first 9.5 chapters complete and an outline. I don't know how the final two chapters are going to play out, but they will get there when I do. I don't think I will be able to properly answer that question until the first draft is complete.

I hope to keep people interested once the story is complete and I begin even more stories that burn in my mind. Right now, though, my train of thought has fizzled and is telling me I must go to bed. Goodnight and thank you for reading.

Monday Mayhem

Mondays, I hope to blog about my goals for my WIP during the course of the current week and keep everyone updated on my progress from the week before.

My goals for writing this week are:

Write at least 30 minutes every day at naptime
Write at least 30 minutes every night after the kids are in bed
Finish Chapter 10

Currently, I have completed writing chapter nine of Serenity. I am anxious to get chapters ten through thirteen written so I can start with all the reveals. Chapter fourteen is where everything begins to unravel.

Serenity word count 01/11/10: 20,319

I would state a word count goal, but it would not work well for my writing style. I have found that I need to take this story one chapter at a time. Hopefully, I can have my first draft completed by the end of February.

Blogging Schedule

I am going to attempt a blogging schedule. Please do not throw anything at me if I fail to keep up with it everyday. I will try my hardest to keep to this schedule, but my kids and family come first. Here is a general breakdown of what I intend to post on given days.

Mondays will be titled Monday Mayhem. I intend to post writing updates and goals. I will update my progress from the prior week and post new goals and a word count.
Tuesdays are Teasers. As I have been doing, I will post a snip from my current WIP. Each week I post a new teaser, the teaser from the following week will be removed.
Wednesdays, I will follow along on a roadtrip. YA Highway posts a writing/reading related question on their blog. I hope to be able to start following along and add some interesting content to my blog.
Thursdays will be Quotable. I will post a quote or two from my current WIP. That may be all that is in my post that day. I may add more, but don't expect it.
Fridays I will Flashback. I will be sharing some of my old writing. I don't know how long it will be posted, so enjoy it while it is up.

I decided to do something new on here to try to put more on my blog than just the teasers. Every Friday (that I can remember to do this) I will post something that I wrote when I was much younger. I have a rather large 3 ring binder of poetry. This could get embarassing as it is not all that great, but I think it would be fun to see and share how I used to write.

Without You
~Sometimes, the loss of a loved one is so great, we cannot go on.~

He tries to sleep
But he cannot bear
The pain and suffering
Of not having her there.
He sits by his window,
His tears falling like rain
His only company
Is his grieving pain.
"I cannot live without you."
He told her last night
He didn't know why he had said it
He just thought it felt right.
A lonely tear
Streamed down his face
As he thought
Of their last embrace.
Memories of last night
Spun throught the air
He cried as he thought,
"I should have been there!"
If only he were
She would have escaped her fate

Vero, a friend of mine from my May 2008 Mommy message board is also a writer. I was inspired by her last two posts on her blog. She has decided to enforce a blogging schedule. Now, I don't think I can blog most days of the week, but I am going to set the goal of blogging at least three days a week. (Check out her blog and learn more about her writing adventures. I am hooked on her Perspective.)

Today's post is inspired by her Friday post. She showed off her writing space, and now, I will show off mine.

I write on my laptop. It is a big ol' thing (17 inch) and the space bar has seen better days, but I love that I can bring my writing with me wherever I go.

I am mainly stationed in the corner of my living room. I keep the computer on at all times during the day so I am ready whenever something pops into my head that NEEDS to come out. (Oh, and, yes, I NEED that blanket as the window beside me has a horrible draft)

I like to keep notebooks, 3-ring binders, and note card containers stuffed between the couch and the wall, and in the nook behind me. The back of the couch catches some stuff as well. Easily accessible.

Well, I have decided that since I have put Undo down for hibernation for an unknown amount of time, I have decided to post the prologue that I managed to pound out. Please enjoy, this may be all you get from this story for quite some time.

NaNo = Not This Year

I starteed NaNo before finishing the first draft of Serenity. Not a very smart move considering how different Serenity and Undo are. I could not invest in Undo with Serenity reeling through my mind. So, to be fair to Undo and its characters, I have decided to drop from NaNo this year. It was not a fun decision, but word count was severely suffering and the story was going nowhere fast. There is always next year. Of course, once Serenity is complete, I could challenge myself to completing the first draft of Undo in 30 days. Hmmm.

Final word count: 3,405/50,000

NaNo WriMo Day #1

I decided to attempt the challenge of NaNo WriMo, so far, the progress has not been fantastic, I'm hoping to catch up tomorrow when I have a little more downtime and hopefully my two little ones aren't as crabby. Update and Goal for 928 - 105

Unfortunately, I did not complete chapter six. A charater is missing a name, he needs it before I can continue. I did that with Xander, too. He started as Bastian, but it wasn't him, so I couldn't go any further until I got it figured out. I was stalled for a few days. I would have thought of a name over the weekend, but I was an extra photographer at a wedding on Saturday :) It was a blast. Now, I am back to my writing world.

My goal for this week is to get to the end of chapter seven. I haven't got a clue what chapter seven will be about just yet, but I will complete it, which means I must complete chapter six. :)

Now, does anyone have a name for a warlock that starts with a K or M and is 8 characters long, tops?

Goal for Today

I have decided, I will start writing down my daily or weekly writing goals to hopefully stay on top of my writing.

Today's goal: Think about Chapter 6 and what needs to be told. Write down important points and begin writing it out. I need to figure out what is on Clay's mind at this point in the story and if he needs to get to his fated destination just yet. Ahhh! My mind need sto figure this out so my fingers can write it out.

Goal for the week: Complete Chapter 6 by Monday the latest.

Just a Small Update

I am currently working on chapter five. I have the chapter figured out, now I just need to get it into written form. It is currently standing at 838 words. I expect it to be just over 2000 words once it is completed.

My entire story is currently standing at 14,097 words. Granted, only 11,749 words are consecutive. The remaining are tidbits I had already written when they began clawing at the inside of my head.

Goal for today: complete chapter five. Can I do it?

Just a very brief update.

I have finished Chapter 4! I'm so excited, things are really falling into place and Seryn's story is only going to get better. She still has a lot to be told. I have around 10,500 words in my first 4 chapters. I'm so excited to have finally hit the 10,000 word mark!

Chapter five is off to a rough start, but I have been doing some editing on the first four chapters and hopefully chapter five will start itself once my revisions are complete.

Well, off to finish my edits, maybe I'll get gutsy enough to share another passage sometime this week.

Plugging Away

I'm almost finished with Chapter two, just a few more things to plug into the story/dialogue and it is complete. The first two chapters are a bit of introduction to the two main characters. Chapter three is when the fun begins. Don't worry, though, the first two chapters are far from slow.

What I find amusing about my writing process, is that, even though I know all the major events, even though I know how it is going to end; the unfolding of this world, these characters, their story excites me. I can't wait to find out how all these things that I know are going to happen come around. I love seeing the characters grow as their simple world gets stretched and molded, as things happen to the characters.

I know the final words of chapter two, but I don't know how much more still needs to be let out before those words are written down and the pre-first draft gets sent to Missy.

By the way, if you are a writer and you don't have a Missy, I suggest getting yourself one ;). Missy is my best friend and she is helping this story take the exact shape I want/need it to take. I finished my pre-first draft of chapter one and sent it to her. She read it and then sent me an e-mail with all the questions that went through her head while she read. I can't tell you how immensely helpful that was. Most of the questions she asked will be answered before the end of the book, but there were some I hadn't thought out and from that, I was able to add in the details my tale was missing. She is truly going to be one of the main nails in keeping this story put together, with her, the reader won't need my brain to understand all the little details.

Well, I need to finish up and get dinner started. I hope to be done with Chapter two tonight and have chapter three close to completed by tomorrow (I already have the last half completed, just need to iron out the details to lead up to the end).

...And We Have a Name

So, I was sitting on the couch this afternoon, going through the list of names Missy, Jason, and I had compiled, when something popped into my head that I needed to write down. Once that section had been written out, my character was finally able to recieve his name! I'm not at a stand-still at the moment! Hooray!

I bought some index cards yesterday, and sat down at the table this evening to fill out my "storyboard". I was having some troubles filling in the gaps from one point toward the end of my story and the actual end. The index cards helped a lot! I highly recommend using index cards to map out a plot if you find yourself getting stuck here and there. You write a sentence or two describing a scene on each card, what ever pops into your head. Once all your scenes have been put onto paper, you lay out your cards and find the most logical sequence for the events. Once they are layed out in the order that makes the most sense to you and then you are able to actually see where you need to fill in any gaps in your plotline. I think I used about half the deck for my story, but, it would have been more had I not already had sections of my story 'completed'.

Well, I am off to write a bit before I call it a night! I hope my stalls are out of the way for now. :)

Names

I hate that one of my characters does not have a name that fits him, yet. My story has stalled for the moment, just because I don't have his name and he is crucial to the story. I tried just throwing a name in there so I could get my story out of my head and onto the computer screen, but his scenes don't feel right because his name is not.

Ah, the frusterations of writing, one miniscual detail can totally throw off your entire groove. I am currently working with my best friend and my husband to namethis character and it is getting closer, but there is still not much I can do with the storyline at this point because he is involved in most of it and writing the wrong name makes his character feel a bit flat there. HMPH!

A New Adventure

With no internet for a month and having just finished reading my latest book series, I decided to try my hand at writing once again. I began going through my old writing projects and found some useable material. I had a slight idea, based on a dream.
I knew the place I began writing was not the beginning. I have a few sections already developing. I decided that I work better when I write what is in my mind, rather than in any sort of order. I know the end and the first big chunk of story. I am excited to see how everything turns out in my written world.
Jason has been helping me with discovering more about my characters and the general story. I have been able to discuss ideas with him that have led to developments for a second and possibly even a third story.
I will be posting thoughts I have regarding my writing process and using this site as an online journal just to write anything that comes to mind. I hope to be able to finish the first draft of this story within the next two months.
Keep watching as I will be running ideas that I may need some feedback on. Thank you for reading and I will try to get on here tonight to write more coherently once all the children in the house are asleep.
